I've always loved SSL Bus Comps in their various guises, so punchy and clear. I also like the fact that there is a really big difference in behaviour between 4:1 and 2:1 ratios. The only problem is there isn't a low roll-off filter on the detector, which is where I loved my modded SSL Comp with a selectable detector filter (it basically lived at 90Hz permanently).
It's always a tickler for me though... slow attack, fast release and never more than 0.5 - 1 dB of reduction at most.
Recently I've actually been doing the Brauer multi-bus compression thing. I always ran 7 specific sub-buses into a stereo mix bus, but now I also selectively compress the sub-buses rather than just the overall stereo mix bus... and then I decide whether I need a further comp on the final stereo bus - sometimes yes and sometimes no.
